Solid Fuel Safety inspections, whats involved, what are the processes and how do we do them? At Hodgsons Chimney Sweeps we are HETAS approved Chimney Sweeps so we use Hetas Safety Inspection Reports and the processes involved.

So what do we do?

How we will inspect your woodburning/ multifuel stove, Solid Fuel Cooking appliance.

  • Visually inspect the chimney stack, pots, terminals.
  • Check paperwork (installers certificate, data plate, previous service records, instruction manual).
  • Inspect appliance and installation for safety and compliance following Manufacturers Insructions (MIs) Approved Document J building regulations and British Standards.
  • Check for ventilation if necessary.
  • Dismantle appliance check parts for defects.
  • Sweep flue way
  • Examine debris
  • Reassemble appliance.
  • Check glass seal.
  • Check seals and gaskets
  • CCTV inspect Flue if necessary
  • Type 2 smoke evacuation test.
  • Spillage test
  • Check flue draft measurement.
  • Pressure test flue to BSEN 1443 using Wohler Dp23 Testing unit.
  • Check CO alarm positioning check date fitted and press button test.
  • Check fuel and fuel storage, moisture test wood if wood being used, if Multifuel appliance check type of Smokeless being used.
  • Give burning and environmental advice.
  • Quote on remedial works if necessary
  • Fill in HUSP if appliance and installation is against the guidelines following the procedure.

Open Fires how do we inspect those?

  • Type 2 smoke evacuation test.
  • Check flue draft measurement.

  • Check for Ventilation and work out size needed, measure accordingly.
  • Check fuel and fuel storage, moisture test wood if wood being used, if Multifuel appliance check type of Smokeless being used.
  • Give burning and environmental advice.
  • Quote on remedial works if necessary.
  • Fill in HUSP if appliance and installation is against the guidelines following the procedure (HUSP is the HETAS UNSAFE SITUATIONS PROCEDURE).

As you can see there are very many more Checks and balances over a Sweep and Smoke Test.
